Information On Different Types And Styles Of Suspended Ceiling
We offer installation of many different styles of Suspended Ceiling; including lay-in Grid, MF Plasterboard Ceilings and Metal Ceilings. We use key brands such as Armstrong, USG, Donne, Owa, Ecophon, Rockfon, SAS, British Gypsum, Knauf and Burgess. These systems can incorporate insulation for thermal or acoustic reasons. Below are some examples of; the most widely used systems, what we can offer, and in what situation they would be used.
Lay-In Grid Suspended Ceilings
Lay-in are constructed from different components to form a modular grid at either 600mm x 600mm or 1200mm x 600mm as standard. These are ideal for concealing pipe or ductwork, electrical services or unsightly soffits, and can incorporate many styles of luminaire. Lay In suspended ceiling tiles with high light reflectance properties will help light an area, whilst lowering the ceiling height effectivley reduces the area that needs heating or cooling. We can offer exposed, semi-concealed, and concealed grid systems. Exposed grids are most widely used in either 15mm or 24mm, with either a square or rebated edge detail. Please see our gallery for some example pictures. The application for each different system varies with the situation. We have highly skilled fitters who are experienced in installing all of the following types of ceilings, and any techniques that are needed in order for a ceiling to reach its requirements.
When choosing the correct system and tiles for a situation a number of different issues need consideration. Does the ceiling need to :
- Offer Fire Protection - If so, for how long? Different standards can be met depending upon the ceiling construction and its components.
- Offer Acoustic Properties - A correct choice in tile will allow a room to function correctly. For example, a meeting room will require a different tile to an open plan office area, as they will be dealing with different levels and types of sound.
- Be Suitable For A Humid Environment - Tiles installed into a toilet area or changing area will need to be able to cope with the increased levels of humidity in the air, so that they won't 'sag' in the grid.
- Offer Hygenic Properties - Rooms requiring high levels of hygeine such as kitchens or laboratories, can have hygenic ceilings specified. These are tiles and grids that resist bio-contamination and are easily cleanable.
- Have a specific edge detail - Ceiling tiles are commonly available with either a Square Edge which sit in the grid. A Microlook Edge which is a rebated edge with cause the tiles to 'hang' below the grid and is widely used for 15mm grid. Tegular Edge which is similar to Microlook but is widely used for 24mm grid.
MF Plasterboard Ceilings
These are non load bearing ceilings that are constructed from a metal framed system, to which plasterboard is then fixed, and which are usually taped and filled, or skimmed, to give a monolithic appearance. The finished surface can then be painted, vinyled, or wall papered. This system is very verstile in the shapes' that it can create. It can incorporate curves, rafts, changes in level and lighting to fulfill almost any aesthetic requirement.
Below are some of the properties of the MF ceiling system :
- MF offers very high acoustic properties. It can be constructed with a SoundBloc board and insulated for soundproofing an area. Specialist boards from the British Gypsum Gyptone and Rigitone range offer incredibly high acoustic performance. The boards are manufactured with specially designed holes or patterns, which convert the sound energy to heat which then disappates, reducing echo and sound. These boards are installed in a slightly different way to normal; the MF system is installed at different centres, the boards are butted together, then tapes and filled to allow decoration. They are available with a variety of patterns, depending upon the level of sound absoprtion required.
- MF also has high fire resistance properties, as it can be installed with specialist plasterboards fixed to it. This system can be built to a high specification offering up to 120 minutes fire resistance in certain instances.
- If access to the plenum will be required, access hatches can be incororated into MF. They come in a range of styles; Beaded Frame which is beaded for a tape and fill or skim finish, Picture Frame which leaves a visible 'border' to the hatch, and a Plaster Frame, which leaves the hatch ready for a skim finish.
